What does it mean “to be Born Again”?

Read John Chapter 3:1-21

“1 Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.”Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!” Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” “How can this be?” Nicodemus asked. 10 “You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.” 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.”

The Necessity of Being Born Again:

It is of vital importance to be “born again” to have a relationship with God and go to heaven after we die. There is a disparity between how perfect and holy God is AND how imperfect and sinful people are, because of their sinful nature. Humans inherited this sinful nature at birth, as sin entered the world in the beginning of times through Adam and Eve´s disobedience. On our own we can’t bridge this gap between us and God, no matter how hard we try to be good or do good things.

God knew that, so He came up with a plan: He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to Earth. Jesus willingly chose to sacrifice Himself, taking the punishment for our sins on our behalf, thus making a way for us to be reconciled with God. This selfless act reconciled us with God. ONLY Jesus could pay for our sins because ONLY Jesus is Holy and pure. No other human being, prophet or messenger is ever capable to redeem us because they are not without sin.

The gap between us and God is bridged by what Jesus did for us by dying on the Cross and taking the punishment for our sins upon Himself. When we believe in our heart that Jesus paid for our sins and when we confess it with our mouth, we become born-again. The spirit part of us becomes alive and we are reconciled with God.

Being “born again” of God changes us into a new creation. Our spirit which was once dead becomes alive by this new birth. God doesn´t see our sins, but instead He sees Jesus living in our hearts, which makes us perfect in God’s eyes.

The Transformation to a New Nature:

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new”

2 Corinthians 5:17″

When we’re born again, we become a NEW creation and have a New Nature, the Old Nature is gone. We are brand new in Jesus!

Humans are made of 3 parts, Spirit-Soul-Body. It is our spirit part that is reconnected with God.

We recommend that you watch these 3 short videos to learn more about this:

The Unchangeable Transformation

When we invite and accept Christ into our hearts, we are born-again. This takes place in our spirit and it lasts forever—it’s a one-time, permanent change. It can’t be taken away or undone. It doesn’t depend on the good things or the bad things we do or what’s happening around us; it’s a gift of God’s grace that cannot be nullified.

“Unlike those other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices every day. They did this for their own sins first and then for the sins of the people. But Jesus did this once for all when he offered himself as the sacrifice for the people’s sins”.
Hebrews 7:27

Jesus at the door of your heart

How can I become born again?

Choosing to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour is the most crucial decision of your life. It takes both the conviction of the heart and the verbal confession of faith for you to be saved (becoming a Christian).

“9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”
Romans 10:9-10
Through His grace, God has already taken every necessary step to secure your salvation. Your role is to embrace this truth through belief and acceptance and by confessing it with your mouth out loud. No-one can do it for you.
To make it easy, you can use this prayer as an example:

“Heavenly Father I thank you for Jesus. I believe that Jesus is the son of God. I believe He lived a sinless, holy, perfect, and pure life and that He died on the cross for my sin.  I believe that God raised Him from the dead on the third day. Jesus, I invite you into my heart and my life and I make you my Lord and Saviour. Thank you for Your Grace, Your mercy, and your love. I repent of my sins and I surrender my life to you. In Jesus name, I pray, Amen!”

Congratulations!!!

If you spoke these words with genuine intent, you are now born-again!! A new chapter begins in your life — you are now a brand-new person, reconnected with God.

The need of being baptised in the Holy Spirit

Once you are born again you can receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God that enables you to live a victorious life as a Christian. You need the Holy Spirit to empower you and help you in everyday life!

When you ask the very spirit of God through faith to come and dwell in you, you’ll receive boldness and power with the evidence of speaking in tongues (groanings expressed as other languages of heaven and men).

Say this prayer:

“Lord Jesus, I ask you to give me your Holy Spirit and I receive your spirit with evidence of speaking in tongues! Thank you God for your Holy Spirit!”

Congratulations! The Lord promised that He would give the Holy Spirit to all who asked Him in faith (Luke 11:10-13). If you believe this promise, you’re filled with God’s supernatural power! It doesn’t really matter whether you felt anything or not when you prayed to receive the Lord and His Spirit. If you believed in your heart that you received, then God’s Word promises you did. God always honours His Word; believe it!

“I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours.”
(Mark 11:24).

Mind Renewal

Once you’ve embraced Jesus as your Saviour and Lord, and experienced the baptism of the Holy Spirit, the process of mind renewal is crucial to live a victorious Christian life. This involves aligning your thoughts with the change that has happened in your spirit, by reading the Word of God. Engage in the diligent study of God’s Word in the Bible to gain knowledge and understanding of your new nature, the abundant blessings bestowed upon you, and your born-again identity. Immerse yourself in the Scriptures through reading, listening to biblical teachings, and actively participating in a Bible-based church that emphasizes the grace of God revealed through the Gospel of Christ.

We can’t think like the world, if we don’t want the world’s results. As we read in Philippians 4:8, we can choose what to think on. To get God’s results in our lives, we need to think and act according to the Word of God.

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
Romans 12:2

Walking by Faith and not by Sight

Walking by faith is to trust in the promises found in the Word of God and not in your own wisdom, understanding, circumstances or carnal senses (sight, hearing, feeling, emotions, taste, and smell).
This means trusting what God says in His Word about you, above anything or anybody else in this world.
By choosing to walk by faith, you open the door to receive God’s promises and blessings contained in His Word.
